They Got the Power
Power Up Cafe, the smoothie-stand-with-a-name-that-makes-you-exhausted-just-hearing-it has finally opened in the front area of Gold's Gym. I was naive, hoping that maybe this would be an actual cafe with seating and coffee and the like. But of course, no. Protein shakes, wheat grass juice, meal-replacement bars... pretty much what you'd expect.
The color and look of the place is modern and spare, red and white, in a style I will refer to as "ti(red)". There are some funky stools in the window so that you can sit-and-model as you finish off that Power Bar Protein-Plus and sip alluringly from that gritty, dairy-free milkshake.
I used to go to the Gold's down on Brannon, and in the few years that I was a member there the front area was a revolving door of protein smoothie stands. It seemed like none could stay in business longer than 18 months, and much like a mushroom or grey hair, as soon as one was plucked out there was another one ready to sprout in its place. Good luck to the Power Up people, but I don't think history is on their side.
