Sad News: The Passing of Michael J.
Putting aside the punning and panning for just a moment, I'm sad to report that Michael Jarvis, the proprietor of the fledgling Michael J. and Company Salon, passed away on June 2. A letter posted outside the building and signed by Michael's partner Daniel Carniglia conveys the sad news.
When I stopped to take this photo someone from the salon was coincidentally outside and chatted with me a little about Michael and his business. Although the letter doesn't say so exactly, the person I spoke with said that the salon will shut down without its namesake leader. He invited me inside to see the salon and the space is really beautifully finished. Apparently it was a dump before they started renovation, and Michael was justifiably proud of the transformation they made in the space.
It's a double shame that so much hard work went into the opening and it has to close after just 2 months, but it is comforting to know that Michael got to see his dream up and running and adding beauty to the world, before he was taken from us.

That's really a shame. That building was in need of some new life. It was the neighborhood Dr,'s office back in the day. As you said in a previous post, it's an odd building.
It had this really cool old fashioned elevator with a door you had to physically open to get inside. And there was a cool statue/picture of St. Francis built right into the wall. (A leftover from the days of a prodominatly Irish-Catholic neighborhood.) Dekki Jewles used to be a thriving pharmacy back in the day. I spent half my childhood in that building.
The Dentist who looks out onto Collingwood, passed away years ago. It would be nice to see some new life go into that building. It is odd, but kind of cool.
That dentist office is empty? No wonder the windows look so shabby!
Yeah, what to do about this building! It's commercial space on a prime corner. A huge redevelopment would make traffic a nightmare for a few months, but imagine if there were an inviting set-up on this corner. There is already huge foot traffic, plus the proximity to two parking lots and the fairy ring (with more parking) would make this a choice retail setting. Hmm.
Does anyone know who owns the building?
